Lighting up La Blanca: a global volunteering effort

Since 2019, in collaboration with our charity partners, we have been installing renewable energy systems to bring access to clean energy to community initiatives across the world.

The Project

In November 2025, fifteen RES volunteers from across our geographies came together in La Blanca, a rural village in Oaxaca, Mexico, to support a community-led solar lighting initiative. Working in partnership with our local charity partner, our team installed 60 solar-powered streetlights across the village. The project aimed to improve safety and access after dark, enabling children to play, families to gather, and residents to move around more freely in the evenings.

For a community where intense daytime heat often limits outdoor activity, the new lighting has transformed how public spaces can be used. Our volunteers worked side-by-side with local engineers and community members on tasks including assembling and installing lighting units to sanding and painting poles under the Oaxacan sun.

Beyond the physical work, the experience offered rich cultural exchange for our volunteers to connect with our Mexico based colleagues and their communities in Oaxaca.

This initiative reflects RES’ commitment to sustainability at a human scale. By combining renewable energy with community engagement, the project delivered tangible social benefits and lasting connections while demonstrating the power of clean energy to illuminate lives in more ways than one.
