Supporting sustainable material management

We continually review and explore innovative construction and maintenance processes to better understand and optimise material use. This includes assessing opportunities to reuse, refurbish and recycle equipment when we repower assets, and investing in in-house repair capability to reduce reliance on new parts and long supply chains.
Supporting sustainable material management
We continually look for ways to give components, equipment and materials a longer, more useful life across our projects. This includes assessing opportunities to reuse, refurbish and recycle equipment when we repower assets, and investing in in-house repair capability to reduce reliance on new parts and long supply chains.
Repowering with care
Our Asset Management teams are responsible for a range of repowering and asset optimisation projects across wind, solar and battery storage portfolios globally. Our approach prioritises risk management, environmental protection and circular economy principles, assessing opportunities for the reuse, refurbishment and recycling of equipment while minimising waste. Working with specialist contractors and supply chain partners, we support the safe removal of infrastructure and appropriate land restoration, aligned with regulatory and landowner requirements. This experience across technologies and countries helps ensure renewable assets deliver responsible outcomes from development through to end of life.
In 2025:
- We successfully completed a repowering project for a 5MW solar farm in the UK. We recycled 21,900 modules and replaced them with around 10,900 larger, more efficient modules.
- We repurposed spare wind turbine blades and towers. The blades were used to create office desks, indoor and outdoor planters, and park benches. These have now been handed back to our client to use in their offices. The turbine tower was repaired and re-used at the same site, avoiding the need to purchase a replacement.
Giving a second life to components
In Albacete, Spain, we have been repairing and maintaining components from renewable energy projects since 2021, ensuring replacement is not the only option. Each repaired component supports the transition to a circular economy by reducing waste, lowering the embodied emissions of assets, reducing costs and minimising downtime. Our spare parts workshop team restores the life of these critical assets, reducing wait time and protecting generation. This year, we continued to develop and enhance our ability to complete repairs for critical renewable assets.
Over the last year, the workshop has increased repairs by nearly 30% compared to 2024. The team now works with over 200 types of materials and delivers electrical, electronic, hydraulic and mechanical repairs, enabling more complex, multi-technology projects. By giving components a second life, we reduce costs for our customers while reinforcing our commitment to sustainability.
