Open-source dataset and AEP validation from a real world case study of turbine upgrades worth 5% AEP

by RES | May 26, 2026 | Reading time: < 1 min

Wind turbine AEP validation

Accurately measuring AEP uplift from wind farm upgrades remains a persistent challenge, particularly where high-quality wind measurements such as LiDAR or met masts are unavailable. This presentation introduces RES’ open-source wind-up methodology and shares results from a real-world case study at Hill of Towie, a 21-turbine onshore wind farm in Scotland, where two upgrades delivered a combined uplift of around 5% AEP.

The analysis draws on over eight years of publicly available SCADA data, using reference turbines and a toggle-based approach aligned with IEC 61400-12-1, with no LiDAR required. AeroUp yielded a P50 uplift of 4.3% (90% CI: 3.3%–5.3%), while TuneUp delivered 1.1% (90% CI: 0.2%–2.0%) — with all data, code, and examples published openly on GitHub.
