Meet Francisco Nunes, RES’ Regional Director LATAM

by RES | Oct 27, 2026 | Reading time: 3 min

Francisco Nunes is RES’ new Regional Director for Latin America. He leads RES’ services business across the region, where RES delivers operations and maintenance (O&M) and asset management for wind and solar assets.

Francisco has more than 18 years’ experience in the renewable energy sector, starting as a commissioning technician and moving into management roles across Central America, the Caribbean, Colombia and Mexico. He joined RES in May 2026 and is based in Mexico City. We asked him about his journey, the Brazilian market, what RES brings to it and what comes next.

1. Tell us a bit about yourself and your journey to RES.

I started in the industry as a commissioning technician. In 2014 I joined Ingeteam in Panama, first as a project manager and then as service manager. In 2019 I moved to Vestas, where I spent almost seven years in service operations, first across Central America, the Caribbean and Colombia, then in Mexico, most recently as Service Director Latam North.

That gave me a close view of what keeps wind farms running in this region, from the field teams to the customer relationship. After years with a turbine manufacturer, the chance to work across all the major OEMs as an independent partner is what brought me to RES.

2. Brazilian Wind Power Conference is around the corner – what’s most important for the Brazilian renewables market right now?

Making every megawatt count. Brazil has one of the cleanest grids in the world, and wind is a cornerstone of it. The challenge has shifted, though. It’s no longer about building capacity, it’s about using it.

Curtailment is cutting around 17% of potential wind and solar output, and the Northeast is hit hardest. Until grid capacity and compensation rules catch up, owners have to get the most from the assets they already have. Availability, performance and cost control have never mattered more.

3. Where does RES fit into that picture?

Right at the centre. RES has supported renewable assets in Brazil for more than 14 years, delivering O&M across wind, solar and electrical balance of plant. Across Latin America we have 5.4 GW under O&M contracts.

Our customers keep coming back. A 288 MW multi-OEM wind portfolio recently renewed its O&M contract with us. We’ve also just signed our first asset management contract in Latin America, for BlackRock’s 130 MW La Bufa wind farm in Mexico. It’s a new service for the region, and it won’t be the last.

4. What sets RES apart in this market?

Independence and depth. We’re not tied to one turbine manufacturer, so our teams work across all the major OEMs in Brazil.

Our local field teams know the sites, the roads and the regulators. Behind them is a business that supports 45 GW of renewable assets across 1,300 sites worldwide. Add digital tools, from SCADA analytics to drone-based blade inspection, and owners get a partner focused on how their assets perform over decades, not just at handover.

5. What’s ahead for the industry in the region?

Flexibility. Curtailment is in every conversation, and the industry wants clarity on how it will be handled. I expect the focus to move from problem to solution: transmission, storage and Brazil’s first battery auction, due in December.

Until then, the owners who do best will be the ones who get maximum availability and performance from every hour their assets can run. That’s where we come in.

6. What matters most to you as a leader?

People. The best advice I’ve ever had is “culture eats strategy for breakfast”. You can have the best strategy in the world, but success comes down to people. I enjoy working with people from different backgrounds and turning challenges into opportunities.
