Bringing solar power to Nepal

Worldwide, many communities still lack access to reliable sources of power hindering healthcare, education and economic opportunities. By ensuring access to affordable, reliable and sustainable energy, we can help to eradicate poverty and hunger, creating sustainable cities and industries with better opportunities whilst also tackling climate change.
Since 2019, in collaboration with our charity partner GRID Alternatives, RES volunteers from around the world have travelled to Nepal to install renewable energy systems that bring clean, reliable power to community initiatives in some of the country’s most underserved areas.
Supporting the Kathmandu Institute of Child Health
In October 2024, for the fourth time, our volunteers from around the world came together in Nepal, this time to bring solar power to a non-for-profit children’s hospital in Damak. Kathmandu Institute of Child Health (KIOCH) delivers integrated multispecialty high-quality child healthcare, free of cost, to all children, thus advancing the quality of life for children in Nepal.
The institute is building a satellite hospital in each of Nepal’s seven provinces to reach more remote communities and make children’s healthcare accessible to everyone. The first satellite hospital, KIOCH-Damak, was built in the Jhapa district. With its general, emergency and cabin beds, NICUs, PICUs, operating room and clinics, hospital in Damak aims to provide healthcare to the region which is home for more than two million people. Charity and volunteering Ten RES volunteers supported the installation of a 31.68kW grid-tied solar electric system with lithium-ion battery backup for emergency loads for the KIOCH-Damak hospital.

Building on years of impact
This latest project builds on the work of previous volunteer teams who brought solar to Nepalese initiatives improving healthcare, education, conservation, and economic opportunity. These projects reflect our long-standing commitment to creating a future where everyone has access to affordable zero carbon energy.
2023
Our volunteers installed solar power and storage at Nepal’s first biodegradable pad factory, Miteri Jaibik Pad Udhyog in Chitwan. The women-led enterprise produces 84,000 eco-friendly pads a month and, with the Radha Paudel Foundation, tackles menstrual stigma and promotes women’s rights. Solar savings help cut costs and expand their impact across Nepal.
2022
Our team installed a 6.3 kW off-grid solar system at the local Health Post and Birthing Centre, serving 7,000 people in Hadsinja, a remote village in Jumla district. The system powers lighting, diagnostic equipment, refrigerators, and warm beds for babies — enabling 24/7 care and emergency services, and helping reduce emissions from fossil fuel use.
2019
Our first Nepal project supported the Bathanpur Community Forest User Group near Bardia National Park. We installed an off-grid PV system at a wildlife observation tower, used for ranger communications, phone charging, and lighting. It continues to support conservation work and generate income for the local community.
When RES says we want a future where everyone has access to affordable zero carbon energy, this is the ‘everyone’ we’re talking about!
