20 August 2025, London – RES, the world’s largest independent renewable energy company, is taking a leading role in shaping global safety standards for the solar sector. Dennis Thorlund Elsberg, RES’ Vice President of Global HSQE Services, has been appointed Chair of the new Global Solar Committee of the Global Wind Organisation (GWO). This appointment positions RES at the forefront of establishing international safety and training standards for solar professionals worldwide.
The creation of the Global Solar Committee comes as the solar industry grows rapidly, requiring comprehensive safety frameworks comparable to those that transformed the wind sector. In July 2025, GWO, in collaboration with the Global Solar Council (GSC), launched the Global Solar Training Standards, which integrate five key modules into two primary standards: the Solar Safety Standard and the Solar Technical Standard. These standards aim to ensure that technicians working in the construction, installation, operation, and maintenance of industrial-scale solar plants are fully equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to work safely and effectively.
Reflecting on his appointment, Dennis Thorlund Elsberg said: “I am honoured to take on the role of Chair of the Global Solar Committee. This is an important milestone for the solar sector, bringing together GSC, GWO and industry leaders to create truly global standards. At RES, we believe people are at the centre of delivering clean energy safely, and these new standards will help ensure solar workers worldwide are not only protected but also empowered with the skills to succeed. I look forward to working with stakeholders across the industry to accelerate adoption and build a safer, stronger and more skilled solar workforce.”
Dennis brings over a decade of expertise in HSQE and global competence management, having joined the GWO General Assembly as a Board Member earlier this year. His leadership as Chair of the Global Solar Committee will ensure that training standards are practical, effective, and aligned with real-world operational challenges.
RES’ involvement enables the company to directly shape training programmes that address emerging needs in solar, bridging the gap between well-established wind industry practices and the evolving requirements of the solar sector. By helping define and implement these global standards, RES reinforces its commitment to workforce safety, skill development, and the broader transition to clean energy. This appointment highlights RES’ dedication to leading across both wind and solar, ensuring that professionals driving the energy transition have the knowledge, protection, and support they need to excel in a rapidly evolving industry.
