RES, the world’s largest independent renewable energy company, has signed a contract with The Renewables Infrastructure Group (TRIG) to deliver its energy management system for a key battery energy storage project in the North East of England through its growing Digital Solutions business.
Located in Spennymoor, County Durham, the 100MW, two-hour duration battery energy storage system (BESS) will help strengthen the UK’s electricity system by storing renewable power when it is abundant and releasing it when demand is high.
The site, which is currently in construction, was developed by RES, with the company securing planning permission in 2022.
RES will deliver its RESolve Energy Management System (EMS) and integration services to allow the project to operate safely, efficiently and reliably. RESolve ensures the asset operates effectively in concert with the wider grid, as a key piece of software enabling storage.
By using these digital solutions RES will help maximise the efficiency of the Spennymoor, protecting the asset, responding rapidly to market and grid signals, and ultimately supporting lower system costs.
Alex Bamberger, VP, Digital Solutions at RES, said: “Batteries are essential for the future of our energy system but they need the right technology behind them to perform at their best. Our EMS software and integration services are built on over a decade of energy storage delivery and operations and help customers like TRIG get the most out of their assets while supporting the energy transition. We’re proud to be supporting Spennymoor – one of the UK’s most important new storage sites – and to continue our strong partnership with TRIG.”
Minesh Shah, Managing Director – TRIG, said: “As more wind and solar projects connect to the UK grid, battery storage is playing an increasingly important role in delivering a reliable, low-carbon energy system. Spennymoor is a key part of that transition, and we’re pleased to be working with RES to benefit from technical services and digital solutions.”
