Madrid Call to Action

Madrid, 23 April 2026 – WindEurope’s Madrid Call to Action has issued a clear challenge to EU leaders: make electrification a strategic priority and accelerate delivery of Europe’s energy transition. For RES, the world’s largest independent renewable energy company, the Call aligns with actions the company has been working towards for decades.

In a recent op-ed by RES’ CEO Eduardo Medina in Windpower Monthly, Medina highlighted that a renewables led energy system is not only essential for meeting climate goals but is the lowest cost and most secure option for Europe’s future energy supply.

A system-wide study by WindEurope and Hitachi Energy, modelled Europe’s full energy system including grids, storage and backup capacity. It showed that accelerating the transition to renewables saves €1.6 trillion by 2050, slower deployment increases exposure to volatile fossil fuel imports and compounds energy security risks.

Wind power already delivers around 20% of Europe’s electricity and supports more than 440,000 jobs across the continent, yet electricity still represents less than a quarter of Europe’s total energy demand. The Madrid Call to Action highlights that with faster electrification and delivery at scale, Europe can capture the enhanced the economic value, resilience and security offered by renewables.

Eduardo Medina, CEO of RES and Board Member of WindEurope, said: “The energy transition is not only a climate obligation, it’s an economic and security imperative. Europe has the technology, the talent and the industrial base. What it needs now is delivery at speed and at scale. The Madrid Call to Action puts this plainly and gives realistic steps to achieving this for the benefit of Europe.”

RES is supporting the call for action, including more grid investment, streamlined permitting, and stable investment frameworks that unlock capital and strengthen Europe’s clean energy supply chain.
