Providing period care for remote workplaces
Providing period care for remote workplaces
by RES | Oct 15, 2025 | Reading time: 3 min

The challenge
At RES, our commitment to inclusion strives for a working environment where every one of our people feels they can pray, parent, partner or participate without fear or uneasiness. Where possible, we implement initiatives that enhance the well-being of our existing workforce while fostering a more inclusive and supportive working environment for all.
Many renewable energy assets are situated in remote locations, usually far from urban settings and accessible welfare infrastructure. Having been selected for their optimal conditions for generating renewable energy, some of these assets can lack substantial welfare infrastructure and due to their rurality typically involve longer travel times and extended working hours for those who work on these projects.
With a growing diverse workforce, the lack of sanitary facilities and period products in these workspaces can lead to physical and mental discomfort, fostering feelings of anxiety and potentially leading to lower productivity.
The solution
In 2024, we launched a trial initiative to introduce sustainable period care and sustainable sanitary disposal bins across 10 sites we manage on behalf of The Renewables Infrastructure Group (TRIG). Following the success of the trial, we proactively approached Octopus Energy Generation and expanded the rollout of period products to all their assets under our management. These efforts are now part of RES’ broader asset management offering, which we provide for our partners.

Initially introduced across RES offices by our Gender Affinity Network as part of a broader commitment to inclusion and equity in the workplace, the initiative gained momentum when our Asset Management team endorsed the opportunity to enhance facilities across the sites we manage on behalf of our customers. This approach also aligns with broader efforts – such as Scotland’s 2022 legislation mandating free period products – to support inclusive wellbeing.
RES continues to champion this initiative, promoting it to other asset owners and partners across existing and future collaborations.
We recognise the importance of challenging and addressing outdated attitudes toward topics often considered as “difficult.” As an employer, it’s our responsibility to ensure everyone feels safe, comfortable, and included at work.
The products, made from 100% certified organic cotton, are ethically produced and packaged by sustainable period product supplier, Riley. The sanitary bins, designed for up to three months’ use, are removed with general waste, avoiding additional disposal costs. As an inclusive employer, we’re proud to work with partners like Riley, whose values align with our commitment to responsible, sustainable business.
The impact
Historically perceived as a taboo or controversial subject matter, period care has often been ignored in the workplace.
A 2023 report by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development found that when surveyed – over 2,000 women aged 18-60 – found that just over 1 in 10 (12%) of women surveyed report that their organisation provides support for period care and related wellbeing. It was found that one in five didn’t know if support was available, and two-thirds (67%) said there is no support available in their workplace.
By making these products visible and readily accessible, rather than hidden away, we support the normalisation of period care and strive towards reducing the stigma surrounding period care at work. By providing accessible products to anyone who needs them, not only improves overall welfare but also contributes to a more inclusive environment where people feel respected and supported.
Promoting equity, diversity and inclusion is both a social responsibility and a business strength. With a proven track record of delivering a strong Environmental, Social and Governance service across our global portfolio of assets we manage on behalf of our customers, our asset management team continues to enhance site management through sustainable and environmental stewardship helping to embed meaningful, people-focused initiatives that align with the values of us and our customers.

“At TRIG, we are committed to fostering a responsible and inclusive working environment across our diverse portfolio. Partnering with RES to introduce sustainable period care solutions on-site has been a key step in enhancing welfare provisions for those working in remote locations. By implementing this initiative, we are not only improving the day-to-day experience for our workforce but also reinforcing our dedication to strong ESG performance, and we are pleased to work with RES to drive meaningful change.”
Chris Sweetman, Chief Operating Officer at TRIG
“We’re proud to work with partners like RES who understand that creating an inclusive culture starts with just doing the right thing. Providing accessible period care on renewable energy sites may seem like a small step, but it sends a powerful message about equity and care in the workplace.”
Margot Smith, ESG Manager at Octopus Energy Generation

Working in remote environments presents unique challenges, especially when it comes to welfare and access to basic facilities. By introducing accessible period products on-site, we’re not only supporting the well-being of our teams but also sending a clear message that inclusion matters – whoever you are and wherever you work. I’m proud RES are taking practical steps to remove barriers to our growing workforce where possible, one step at a time.
