Project raises RES\u2019 UK storage portfolio to 420MW<\/p>\n

Renewable energy <\/span>company <\/span>RES has been given the go-ahead to build a<\/span> new <\/span>energy storage project in North Yorkshire, bringing its total energy storage portfolio in UK&I to 420MW. <\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

\n

The <\/span>99.9MW <\/span>Lakeside Energy Storage project will be located in<\/span> the <\/span>Selby district of <\/span>North <\/span>Yorkshire and<\/span> will be a key enabler to helping use more renewable energy to power <\/span>the UK<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The utility-grade batteries will store <\/span>electricity from the national grid at times of low demand<\/span> and high renewables <\/span>generation,<\/span> with the stored energy<\/span> exported back to the grid at times of high demand<\/span> and lower renewable electricity generation<\/span>.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Once completed, Lakeside will become the largest<\/span> energy storage project within RES\u2019 420MW portfolio<\/span>. Alone it offers <\/span>the potential to store enough energy to <\/span>supply the daily power needs of over 2<\/span>0<\/span>,000 <\/span>homes<\/span>*<\/span>. <\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The development<\/span> <\/span>has consent for<\/span> <\/span>51 energy storage containers and 42 transformers<\/span>.<\/span> Construction is expected to begin in<\/span> <\/span>late<\/span> <\/span>2022<\/span>, and the site is set to be fully operational by <\/span>late<\/span> 2023<\/span>. <\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

As with other RES projects, plans are in place to ensure the area in North Yorkshire benefits \u2013 in<\/span>cluding a biodiversity project which will exceed the Government\u2019s desired 10% biodiversity net gain requirement. <\/span>A total of <\/span>3.10 hectares<\/span> of land<\/span> <\/span>is proposed for <\/span>varying types of <\/span>habitat creation.<\/span> To help ensure the land\u2019s national biodiversity is preserved, scrub habitats will be created elsewhere on the site to provide landscape screening, neutral grassland and sustainable urban drainage features. <\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Increasing energy storage capacity is essential for continued development and deployment of zero carbon renewable energy technologies such as solar and wind energy generation on a large scale. <\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
