As part of his Renewable Energy Engineering degree, Eoghan has been learning on the job working alongside our experienced Wind O&M team in Northern Ireland. Alongside this, <\/span>Eoghan\u2019s passion for drones and his local community, where he volunteers with the Irish Coast Guard, brings another skill set to our already talented workforce.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Career journey so far…<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

I started at RES in June 2022<\/span>, <\/span>aged 19<\/span>, <\/span>on a<\/span> 12-month <\/span>professional development <\/span>placement<\/span> <\/span>from Ulster University<\/span> <\/span>where I am studying <\/span>Renewable Energy Engineering. <\/span>As part of the <\/span>placement, I am primarily based in Northern Ireland<\/span>, <\/span>working <\/span>as part of <\/span>RES<\/span>\u2019<\/span> <\/span>O<\/span>nshore <\/span>W<\/span>ind <\/span>O<\/span>perations and <\/span>M<\/span>aintenance (<\/span>O&M<\/span>)<\/span> team <\/span>as <\/span>a <\/span>technician.<\/span> <\/span>Prior to RES, I <\/span>had <\/span>little <\/span>experience in the w<\/span>ind industry but ha<\/span>ve since <\/span>progressed <\/span>into the role of<\/span> Competent Technician<\/span>,<\/span> <\/span>completing semi-annual and annual maintenance<\/span>. I also<\/span> <\/span>help<\/span> to resolve<\/span> turbine faults to ensure maximum production for each site and reduce<\/span> asset<\/span> downtime.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

What are you most proud of at RES?<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

After my <\/span>initial<\/span> 12-month placement I was fortunate enough to be offered the opportunity to <\/span>continue<\/span> <\/span>with <\/span>RES until the start of my final year at university<\/span>.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

 <\/p>\n

The Role<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

 <\/p>\n

My role as<\/span> a <\/span>turbine technician <\/span>consists<\/span> of <\/span>supporting<\/span> the <\/span>day-to-day<\/span> <\/span>delivery of turbine services <\/span>a<\/span>s well as<\/span> <\/span>major <\/span>component<\/span> replacement projects. <\/span>A typical day at RES for me usually starts at 8:30am with a daily meeting with my line manager and colleagues where we will reflect on the previous day’s work alongside focussing on the work priorities for the day ahead. After this, we usually head to a site where <\/span>we\u2019ll<\/span>, resolve faults, or work on a semi-annual or annual service on a turbine to ensure maximum output from each site.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

I have really enjoyed my time with RES so far, <\/span>from<\/span> working at height<\/span> <\/span>and <\/span>having the unique <\/span>opportunity<\/span> to see the <\/span>local <\/span>landscapes from on top of a turbine (<\/span>not many<\/span> people get to <\/span>say or<\/span> see<\/span> <\/span>that) <\/span>to t<\/span>he satisfaction of resolving faults and issues<\/span> <\/span>on a daily basis<\/span>. <\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Everyone has been <\/span>extremely helpful<\/span> and supportive throughout the year with a special mention to my <\/span>mentor Kevin<\/span>,<\/span> whose guidance and time have <\/span>been <\/span>invaluable.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Where do you see your career in five years’ time?<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

 <\/p>\n

It’s<\/span> hard to know what will happen over the next <\/span>five<\/span> years<\/span> <\/span>once <\/span>I\u2019m<\/span> fully <\/span>qualified as a Renewable Energy Engineer<\/span> and <\/span>it is <\/span>still<\/span> <\/span>quite <\/span>early in my career. I hope to<\/span> stay within the wind <\/span>industry<\/span> <\/span>and<\/span> <\/span>I am interested in finding out more about careers in the<\/span> development of wind turbines<\/span> and <\/span>how I could <\/span>contribut<\/span>e<\/span> to the design of <\/span>their<\/span> size, <\/span>output<\/span> and aerodynamics.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

 <\/p>\n

I<\/span> also<\/span> enjoy flying<\/span> drones<\/span> and have <\/span>completed my drone <\/span>licences<\/span> in full<\/span> <\/span>which would be<\/span> useful for a career<\/span> on<\/span> turbine inspections<\/span> in the future<\/span>.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Tell us about your favourite hobbies and interests<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

I am<\/span> a member of the Irish Coast Guard at my local unit in <\/span>Downings<\/span>, Co. Donegal<\/span>. We are <\/span>one <\/span>of a select few stations in the country that cover <\/span>the <\/span>four<\/span> aspects<\/span> o<\/span>f <\/span>boat, cliff, <\/span>search<\/span> and drone <\/span>which<\/span> <\/span>keeps me busy<\/span>!<\/span> I enjoy the <\/span>satisfaction <\/span>of helping people<\/span> who are<\/span> in need and the benefit it brings to the local community. <\/span>I enjoy flying the drone and I am one of four drone<\/span> pilots within the unit<\/span>.<\/span> I hope to <\/span>progress<\/span> from <\/span>Cr<\/span>ew to <\/span>D<\/span>eputy <\/span>C<\/span>oxain<\/span>,<\/span> and then finally <\/span>C<\/span>oxain<\/span> (the <\/span>C<\/span>oxain<\/span> <\/span>has the overall responsibility of the boat<\/span> particularly<\/span> at the helm and is <\/span>assisted<\/span> by the <\/span>Deputy<\/span> <\/span>C<\/span>oxain<\/span> or boat navigator along with the crew<\/span>)<\/span>.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

 <\/p>\n

I am <\/span>also <\/span>a keen cyclist and <\/span>runner<\/span>. <\/span>I race regularly<\/span>, <\/span>competing in some large races such as <\/span>the <\/span>Mayo Ultra 300km solo and <\/span>the <\/span>Donegal Ultra 555 as a <\/span>four-<\/span>person team<\/span> where<\/span> we finished 3rd in 2022<\/span>. H<\/span>opefully, this year we can go <\/span>two<\/span> steps further and lift <\/span>the <\/span>trophy at the end of 555 gruelling kilometres<\/span>.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

I have a strong passion for motorsport and Irish rallying, I do some navigating and I am currently 2nd in the <\/span><\/span>C<\/span>lass 7 Northern<\/span> Ireland<\/span> Rally <\/span>Championship<\/span>. <\/span><\/span>I <\/span>also <\/span>enjoy traveling and <\/span>have attended <\/span>shows such as the Paris Auto Show in October and Boot<\/span>, a water sport trade show,<\/span> in D<\/span>\u00fc<\/span>sseldorf in January.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
