Forss Wind Farm Extension

In December 2004, Abbey Properties Cambridgeshire Ltd applied for full planning permission to the Highland Council for a four turbine extension to the existing wind cluster at the former US Naval Communication base at Forss, Thurso in Caithness.

Abbey Properties were assisted by Renewable Energy Systems Ltd, The Rodgers Practice and NDR (Environmental Services) Ltd in designing the wind farm extension and preparing the Planning and Environmental Statement

The turbines proposed for the extension would be similar to those already operating on the site and would have a tubular tower and be three bladed with a height to blade tip not exceeding 78m with a nominal rated output of 1300kW (1.3MW) each. The proposed development will also have associated electricity transformers, access tracks, substation compound and control building and one wind
monitoring mast.

Every year the wind farm extension would produce sufficient electrical energy to satisfy the average requirements of over 2,680 homes. Construction of the wind farm should take approximately 5 months.

The wind farm application was submitted with an Environmental Statement

This NTS was produced at the time of the original planning application, and some details may have since changed
