Solar Heating
Solar thermal systems make use of the energy in the sun’s rays to provide heating. The heat can be used in domestic and commercial hot water systems, swimming pools, and even industrial processes. The UK currently has around 120 MW of solar heating capacity installed nationwide. However, other European countries with similar climates have almost 50 times this amount. This demonstrates the huge untapped potential for cheap and environmentally friendly heating that is available in the UK.
Solar thermal panels can easily be fitted to buildings, and are cheap to install and maintain.

| A solar panel is attached to the roof of a building where the sunlight shines most directly. This sunshine heats up water circulating through the panels. The heat is then transferred to the water tank via a heat exchanger, providing renewable heat to the premises. |
