Design Phase Manager

RES currently has a Design Phase Manager position open in our Broomfield, CO office.

Summary: Coordinate engineering effort with the RES Americas region engineering team and/or third-party engineering that provides designs of utility scale wind/solar power plants

Specific duties:

Bidding and Proposal

During the bidding and proposal phase of the Project, the Design Phase Manager (DPM) will assist the project management team (PM) by:

  • Coordinate and/or perform preliminary design activities for early stage development projects (engineering and CAD)
  • Determine schedule to support deliverables schedule (ex; roads need to be done well before deadline to support electrical layout)
  • Determine estimating group’s needs for engineering support (ex; indicative estimate, full quantities)
  • Determine resources needed based on needed engineering support with Engineering Discipline Manager(s) and/or third-party engineering
  • Create and distribute Engineering Services Scope of Work for third-party engineering proposals
  • Perform review of designs provided by Owner/Internal/Third-Party
  • Develop/manage engineering cost database
  • Perform review of RFP documents, and contract exhibits
  • Perform review and create bid tab for third-party engineering services proposals
  • Identify deviations from Industry/RES design/construction standards and its cost impact during pricing
  • Seek opportunities for value engineering and efficiencies in design
  • Identify and quantify potential risks, contract clarifications, and exclusions
  • Facilitate handovers to project teams when projects are won or transition to late stage developmentDesign engineering / construction phase

Project Setup

DPM will work with the PM and Engineering Department Managers:

  • Identify the Technical Engineering Leads (TL) for the project
  • Coordinate and host engineering kick off meetings
  • Assist PM with decision for procurement of engineering services
  • Negotiate with sub consultants on service agreements
  • Assist PM to establish Job codes / Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) and Project creation wizard (create folder structure and work order) for design/construction phase
  • Assist construction project coordinator to set-up document control system
  • Host / lead design kickoff with client
  • Ensure team reads and understands client requirements along with project scope, schedule, and budget
  • Develop task-level schedule Engineering Project Tracker (EPT) and track progress during pre-construction and detailed design engineering phase, following the EPT work instruction
  • Distribute team accountabilities with communication plan

Detailed Engineering

During the detailed engineering phase, DPM with work with TLs:

  • Create design submittals (for RES internal engineering scope)
  • Distribute design documentation to Owner and other engineering disciplines, following the RES standard document control processes
  • Coordinate technical design reviews, culminated with consolidated review comments, responses, and resolution
  • Host / lead constructability review with PM, TLs, construction team, and construction subconsultants
  • Coordinate review of construction procedures and major material cut sheets or vendor drawings
  • Track design schedule using the EPT for weekly distribution to the PM, following the EPT work instruction
  • Upkeep design change log for periodic distribution to the PM

Project Management Support

DPM will assist, to the extent the PM requires, in:

  • Review / approval of invoicing from and payment to engineering subconsultants
  • Management and recommendation to PM on change requests from engineering subconsultants
  • Track and report progress and schedule of engineering design via the EPT, following the EPT work instruction
  • Upkeep design change log for periodic distribution to the PM

Construction Support

Once the on-site construction activities have begun and the Construction Project Engineering (CPE) has been established, the DPM will:

  • Meet with the CPE and construction management team to review engineering design and construction documents
  • Schedule or support organizing initial site visits for TLs during start of construction activities
  • Transition responsibilities for engineering subconsultant coordination to CPE over a period of 45 days (beginning at initial mobilization for each engineering discipline)
  • During this transition period, DPM will assist the CPE with coordination of product and shop drawings submittals to the TLs and engineering subconsultants for approval and client acceptance
  • Provide technical resources to the CPE, as needed, during the construction phase of the project that are not specifically the responsibility of the engineering subconsultants

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Expert level of knowledge in:
    • Wind/Solar Power Plant Design
    • Wind/Solar Power Plant Performance Analysis

 

  • Advanced level of knowledge in:
    • Communication, internally and externally
    • General Civil, Structural, Electrical, SCADA, and Mechanical Design
    • General Design for Constructability
    • Familiarity with Industry Standards
    • Personnel Management
    • Client Management
    • Organization
    • Microsoft Excel (Advanced)

 

  • Intermediate level of knowledge in:
    • Project Scheduling Tools
    • Detailed Design Software:
      • Fundamental understanding of AutoCAD
    • MS Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook, etc.)

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Civil, Structural, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (Master’s degree preferred)
  • 10+ years cumulative engineering experience with relevant wind/solar experience
  • Must have a valid current driver license, eligible for corporate vehicle insurance coverage.
  • Must be able to obtain a valid current passport to travel outside the U.S.
