Senior Project Engineer - Kings Langley

Job Purpose/Summary Details This is a design management role, responsible for ensuring the consistent, efficient and safe execution of all engineering activities on an offshore wind farm project; and has various main functions: • Ensuring the adequate support & resourcing to all technical areas of the project • Ensuring appropriate technical methods and standards are being followed and that trade- offs between different work packages are balanced • Developing the offshore & onshore infrastructure definitions from initial site identification through to a commercially & legally viable project. • Managing the execution of multiple scopes of work

Organisational Context (to include impact and influence)

The role is likely to report directly to a Project Manager in parallel to the line manager

The role will include the supervision & checking of the work of others

The work is focused to the development & pre-construction phases of a project but may also involve works during & post construction

RES Offshore often works as a consultant so the role is client-facing and may involve working on behalf of a client in their project team

The role includes elements of Business Development

The role is based in Kings Langley but is likely to involve significant periods working at Clients’ offices and on occasion at onshore and offshore sites

Key Accountabilities

Proactively identify engineering issues and risks to be addressed

Ensuring Engineering activities are completed in a safe, timely and quality manner

Creating & managing project or package programmes to identify and schedule engineering input

Hold Design Responsibility as an approver of Designs

Perform CDM-Designer and Principal Designer duties

Calling and holding Design Reviews & Design Risk Assessments

Provide the necessary engineering and construction information to inform scoping, environmental impact assessment (EIA), and planning applications

Identify project design drivers and develop project designs to optimize the outcome.

Carry out technical analyses

Presenting of engineering progress to project team and management reporting

Identifying and implementing areas of process improvement and capability development

Supervision of engineering activities across a range of packages

Approval of calculations, reports and drawings

Review and technical approval of project changes

Resolving technical disagreements between different parties, internal and external

Management of resource & delivery of work packages

Estimating resource requirements and budgets

Support the assessment and procurement of technical equipment and products

Support package, contract and project managers as requested

Identify and realise business opportunities for RES in consultancy and contacting - this will include maintaining RES’s public image, writing and negotiating proposals.

The engineering issues to be considered may include:

  • Wind turbines
  • Wind turbine seabed foundations
  • Subsea MV & HV cables
  • Offshore substations: electrical & structural aspects
  • Marine operations
  • Substations up to 400KV with National Grid connection
  • Control and SCADA systems
  • Site investigations and geotechnology
  • Wind farm techno-economics
  • Wind farm layout, yield & revenue
  • Instrumentation and met masts
  • Environmental

The role may at times require supporting other RES business units or working on other, non- offshore wind, projects on occasion as workload requires.


Knowledge of generating strategies for the delivery of a country wide business development plan

Knowledge of typical contents of a marketing plan for selling services in a B2B environment

Knowledge of business development process typically used for selling services in a B2B environment

Knowledge of the principles of key account management and;

Knowledge of the UK Wind, Solar & Storage renewable energy sectors, in particular the drivers of the cost of energy that service providers can influence.


Excellent communication skills, particularly for leading teams drawn from across RES to develop tenders and for representing RES credibly and presenting our services clearly and positively in face-to-face meetings, presentations and written proposals with clients, contractors and other stakeholders;

Strong numerical analysis skills required for developing cost models for delivering technical services (such as asset management and O&M) under long term contracts;

Strong research and strategic analysis skills;

Excellent organisational skills to meet demanding timescales on a number of potentially simultaneous tenders and other business development activities;;

Ability to use Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel & PowerPoint)


·      Experience in managing sales and business development teams.

·      Experience in planning and delivering business development activities (with clients and contractors) for selling services in a B2B environment;

·      Experience in preparing proposals;

Experience of working within the UK (wind/solar/storage) renewable energy sectors


·      A degree in mechanical or electrical engineering, or equivalent qualification is desirable, but a proven background in a relevant business development activity may be sufficient; and

Hold a UK driving licence.
