Data Scientist - Kings langley

The Data Scientist role is a key role within the Technical department, combining elements of technical analysis, statistics and software engineering to project work across multiple technologies and markets. The Data Scientist has responsibility for providing data analysis and technical support to teams in all key markets and ensuring that task delivery is aligned with project programmes, budget and scope. As a company that operates a global fleet of renewable energy plants, deploys meteorological measurement devices globally and harvests weather and energy market data from external sources RES have no shortage of data to work with. The Data Scientist is responsible for leveraging these datasets to provide data-driven solutions and guidance to the wider business. A Data Scientist at RES will provide solutions to challenging and diverse problems related to the design and operation of renewable energy projects across the globe: designing optimal control strategies for energy storage plants, analysing the performance of operational wind farms and predicting the future production of renewable energy power plants to name just a few. The Data Scientist also has responsibility for research, development and delivery of new analytical tools for the business using Python and related packages (e.g. pandas, scikit-learn).

Organisational Context

As a company we are proud of our reputation as leaders in renewable energy and for demonstrating that a low carbon future is possible, affordable and desirable. The Technical Department is a key part of this. We are a team of data scientists, analysts and software developers working collaboratively to provide bespoke analysis and software solutions across the global business. This includes:

  • Site selection and feasibility analysis

  • Technical analysis to optimise the design of a wind farm, solar farm or energy storage facility, as well as prediction of energy production and economic viability

  • Asset management, including analysing and improving the performance of operational sites

The Data Scientist will report to the Data Science Manager within Group Technical. To be successful in a competitive market the Data Scientist will need to:

  • use the Python programming language and relevant packages (e.g. pandas, scikit-learn) for data analysis, machine learning and creation of new analytical tools

  • help keep the team up to date with the latest developments in processing of large data sets, data visualisation and machine learning

  • work on projects throughout the RES regions and provide all required technical assessments in line with budgets, programmes, scopes and expectations

  • support the drive to lean processes and reduced waste within Group Technical

Key Accountabilities

  • ad hoc analysis and tool development using the Python programming language, SQL and related technologies

  • reporting and visualisation of results for technical and non-technical stakeholders

  • automation of key report generation

  • analysis of operational data for wind, solar and storage assets

  • time series modelling of resource (wind and solar), for assessment of grid, and other, constraints

  • energy yield assessments in all markets (wind and solar)

  • further wind energy technical analysis such as linear & non-linear (CFD) wind flow modelling, layout design, acoustic assessments, etc.

  • techno-economic analysis for energy storage projects

  • developing relationships inside RES to maintain a high level of knowledge and competency

  • technical support for transactions and closing projects including management of technical due diligence and condition compliance

  • support RES software user requirements gathering, technical specification and training

  • continuous improvement of technical processes within the technical team

Work Environment

We work at RES' award winning low carbon global headquarters, Beaufort Court. The office is less than 5 minutes’ walk from Kings Langley train station.  The office includes a locker room with showers for runners and cyclists - there is a cycle to work support scheme and many country footpaths around the office for lunch time runs or walks.

Skills & Requirements

Requirements:

  • You have a passion for renewable energy and want to play an active part in preventing climate change.

  • You have achieved an excellent degree result in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics or a related discipline and/or you have relevant work experience.

  • You are experienced in using a programming language such as Python, R or Matlab for data analysis.

  • You listen to customer requirements and design solutions to meet their needs.

  • You understand the basic physics of wind and solar and can apply your physics knowledge to solve problems.

  • Bonus points if:

  • You have taken coursework in renewable energy or have experience working in the renewables industry.

  • You are familiar with SCADA systems for wind and/or solar farms

  • Familiarity with object-oriented programming and test-driven development

  • You know your way around cloud computing platforms such as AWS or Azure
