Systems Engineer - Energy Storage (Australia)

Be a key technical member of a pioneering Energy Storage team focused on evaluating and defining new Energy Storage sales opportunities, and managing the work program to deployment. Based in Sydney the role reports to the Head of Energy Storage and suits an enthusiastic, accomplished Systems Engineer with experience in complex control systems and renewable energy projects.

The Systems Engineer will:

  • Have direct responsibility for engineering inputs and manage and direct internal and external engineering resources to support energy storage projects,

  • Work with prospective customers to identify best commercial and technical fit of RES Australia’s energy storage systems by creating and defining the business case,

  • Work closely with the Grid Services, Commercial teams and internal/external engineering resources to develop functional specifications and preliminary site designs for customers,

  • Participate in energy storage grid connection conversations to ensure integration issues are addressed,

  • Work with the customer and sales team to negotiate technical elements of contracts to completion,

  • Understand energy markets and utilities, define  functional requirements with technical and engineering colleagues,

  • Work with the sales team to evaluate new market segments and perform analysis of energy storage potential,

  • Participate in on-going regulatory processes related to tariffs and market mechanisms to inform / update modeling processes,

  • Evaluate the components of energy storage systems, the integration of these components and the integration of energy storage systems with other technologies, and work with internal team members to make integration recommendations,

  • Maintain responsible control over preliminary design activities pertaining to the opportunity/ project, including engineering, quality control, and standards compliance,

  • Provide guidance to internal stakeholders on customer construction logistics, site preparation, material and labor costs to ensure high value design,

  • Bottom up cost estimation.

Background

  • Demonstrated experience in primary and secondary systems design and integration,

  • Demonstrated experience in analysis to solve complex problems,

  • Demonstrated experience related to energy markets and utilities,

  • Demonstrated experience working with utilities on generation development and interconnection,

  • Demonstrated experience working on large scale energy solutions for commercial and industrial customers,

  • Ability to review contracts and technical scopes of work,

  • Ability to breakdown complex engineering ideas for customers new to energy storage,

  • Ability to execute many projects and tasks in parallel,

  • Excellent communication and documentation skills, and

  • Deep passion for changing the way we use energy on the electric grid.  

 

Requirements

  • Bachelor or Masters in Engineering (Electrical Preferred),

  • 3+ years work experience in the energy or renewable industry,

  • Minimum of 5+ years of professional engineering experience.

  • Experience in Solar PV or Wind Power system design is preferred,

  • Knowledge of battery systems, power conversion, and grid systems,

  • Strong knowledge of MS Office tools (Excel, Word, & Powerpoint),

  • Ability to keep track of quickly-changing market conditions regarding storage funding, product development, and competitive landscape,

  • Ability to prioritize and execute many tasks in parallel,

  • Familiarity with financial analysis,

  • Eligible for Institute of Engineers Australia,

  • Valid Australian work permit, and

  • Fluent in English.
