Head of Finance - Sydney

Reporting into the COO for RES Australia Pty Ltd (based in Sydney) and working closely with the CEO for RES Australia (based in Europe), this role is responsible for managing all aspects of financial and tax compliance, planning, reporting and controlling. The role will contribute to the RES Group mission to innovate to reduce the cost of renewables and create growth for our business. The role will enjoy indirect support from the EMEA Finance Director and International Tax Manager (both based in Europe) under a matrix management structure.

 Given the growth in commercial scale renewable energy deployment in Australia, the RES Australia Pty Ltd business is preparing for significant growth in its operations in the short and medium term. This is a newly created position is required to manage and deliver all aspects of financial and tax support to the business, which is currently being delivered by outsourced agencies. This is a hands-on role requiring significantly flexibility to manage both detailed day-to-day demands and supporting the management team in delivering the growth strategy for RES Australia Pty.

RES Australia Pty Ltd is the Australian subsidiary of the RES Group, a UK parented, privately owned developer, constructer and asset manager of large scale wind, solar and battery storage infrastructure with global revenues exceeding A$1bn and operations in 9 core territories.

Key Accountabilities

 Compliance & Treasury

  • Fulfilling all local financial and tax compliance obligations (e.g. accounts preparation, GST compliance, corporation tax compliance) for RES Australia Pty Ltd and its subsidiaries

  • Management of day-to-day local working capital requirements, cashflow forecasting and liaison with Group Finance regarding funding requests

  • Managing the audit process, including the statutory audit of RES Australia Pty and its subsidiaries. Supporting the Group Finance team with component submissions for the Group audit (under an IFRS reporting package).

  • Controlling

  • Implementation of a basic finance system following transition from the outsourced service providers and financial transaction process implementation. Some outsourced support will be required locally and will be managed by the successful candidate.

  • Management of the general ledger, fulfilling all supplier payments, managing bank accounts and relationships with banks.

  • Balance sheet review and control, monthly balance sheet reconciliations

  • Responsible for controls implementation, monitoring and continuous improvement.

  • Interface with outsourced payroll provider

Reporting & Analysis

  •  Responsible for delivering routine management accounts on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis to Accountable Lead Managers (ALMs) and project managers

  •  Responsible for co-ordinating and delivering the regular monthly, quarterly and annual KPI reporting to Group Finance including actual and forecast P&L, balance sheet, 12 month cashflow forecasting and KPI input co-ordination together with ALMs and COO.

  •  Delivering ad-hoc analysis to Accountable Lead Managers and other project managers.

Planning, Budgeting & Forecasting

  •  Co-ordination and delivery of quarterly 3 year forward looking rolling forecasts

  •  Co-ordination of the annual budget setting process

  •  Supporting the strategy planning and long term forecasting


  • Ad-hoc tax and financial support to the commercial team

  • Liaising with the International Tax Manager for regular updates on tax compliance and tax planning

  • Leading on local tax planning initiatives 


  • Solid understanding of key management accounting concepts gained through previous experience in a commercial organisation.

  •  Solid technical accounting knowledge (ideally with IFRS experience), together with the Companies Act requirements in Australia statutory accounts preparation.

  •  Understanding of and proven management of Sales Tax compliance matters

  •  Understanding of and proven management of Australian Corporation Tax compliance matters

  •  Strong awareness and understanding of Australian tax planning opportunities, such as stapled trust structures


  •  Excellent collaboration and communication skills with the confidence and credibility to articulate messages clearly at a senior level, both internally and externally;

  •  A team player but with the discipline and self-motivation to enjoy working autonomously;

  •  Strong influencing skills and the confidence and gravitas to develop strong working relationships internally and externally from the outset, and to negotiate positive outcomes

  •  Proactive, tenacious, highly organised and comfortable liaising with multiple stakeholders and competing priorities

  •  Inquisitive but task driven and solution orientated mindset

  •  Strong Microsoft Excel skills


  • At least 7 years Post Qualification Experience gained in a commercial environment

  • Proven ability to deliver routine financial and tax planning, reporting, controlling, forecasting and budgeting.

  • Experience of business partnering within a dynamic growth environment

  • Proven project management skills and comfortable managing competing priorities;

  • Finance systems and finance processes implementation experience is an advantage

  • Experience in the renewable energy sector or wider energy sector is desirable but not essential
